Blade sets are cheap Both Missouri wind and Windy Nation sell high quality blade and hub sets. It is to much trouble to build these blade sets easier to buy these balanced units that will last a life time!
well, lesson learnt, i am new into wind and i thought about pvc and had concerns of blade failure… this video and comments confirmed my suspicions… thanks,
Im thinking that if someone is out in a 40 mph wind storm then they are gonna get hit by something anyway……
PVC turns brittle when exposed to sun. Maybe the paint helps. Maybe ABS pipe would be better. If this design is easy for people, maybe the easiest upgrade would be to reinforce them with some fiberglass. It’s fairly easy to work with and very strong.
@kk72390 Life kills.
@PonyHaven
finally a use for that old mast i have laying around, thank you nice idea.
This is a public service announcement. Thank you for uploading this warning.
I keep shouting “THEY ARE PAPER THIN!”, but people need an accident (negligence) to feel like they need to change something. The original pvc wind turbines used blades three times the thickness.
Did you know we have already entered the sixth mass extinction phase in our planet’s history? Or that we have a 50/50 shot at survival if we act now.
Our entire history can be for nothing in the next 30 to 50 years. Seriously
Though Aluminium is surely more dangerous than PVC, I have been running 3 aluminium turbines for over 7 years now.
The turbines are 1.4 metres in diameter – and generate 30A at 15V.
There have been no failures in all that time, even though we have had many violent storms. My PVC blades never lasted longer than 18 months.
Has anyone else tried Aluminium tube for blades?
I know OF a young woman who was killed when a 1/2 inch piece of pvc from a similar windmill slipped through her ribs and pierced her heart! You are right these things can KILL!
@muddymuddymuddmann
sure you can use it.
thanks,jeff
Jeff I want to post this video on my site if it’s ok with you. I know i have totally torqued a lot of jaws just by downing the pvc blades. some say that you need to use the green pvc and a whole lot of other suggestions. in my book the heavier the pvc the more force is created at high speeds. Good wooden blades are safer. and your raptor blades are light weight high strength quality plastic. and thin on the ends. Not much centrifugal force there. VERY SAFE!!
pvc BLADES CAN KILL! tnx 4 THE VID.
Thanks for the heads up.
Nasty lesson!!
I have used PVC in a number of high speed turbines. Typical lifespan is 14 months, in all sorts of weather – including vicious storms. Failure occurs due to fatigue fractures.
.
7 years ago, I made 2 high speed turbines from aluminium tube. They are still in perfect working order today
They have stood up to some of the most fearsome storms – without problems.
While aluminium may not be the best choice, its longevity is incredible.
thank you brother, you show me how is important to looking from oder angle for healt, i’ll think again and again..
balance is everything . static and dynamic
also light weight moves easier
looks like old usn shirt..
Wow , I would like to see fast moving sharp objects flying thru the air. Well atleast at my exwifes house.
i like applesauce

what kind of motor are you using?
It can happen in +40mph winds. Like someone else said, sorry to see you learn the hard way.
i’m not sure if this would apply to Australia. i have used thicker walled pvc for my blades but the pip i used was for a different rating of water pressure. to brown55061 i have seen people on some neighboring boats have used black pvc for blades. i have seen the orange pvc used for blades too.
It could depend on what kind of PVC you use as well. Has anyone tried black ABS plastic? Was this pvc pipe schedule 80? The lighter stuff is going to flex more and break. Granted, the heavier wall PVC is going to have a higher startup wind speed but it wont break as easy. Just tossing out ideas, I haven’t built one yet.
